Writing Center

This week, I had a chance to visit the campus writing center. Southern provides a great center for students to visit if they need any sort of help with writing, or organizing ideas.
The center is located in the bottom floor of Engleman Hall in room A-014. I asked what the most common thing students went for, and the woman said it was mostly students looking for help structuring their papers.
The center can get busy, especially when it gets close to exam time. For help with your writing, or to get some more info, you can visit the writing center webpage at http://www.southernct.edu/tutorialcenter/

Time to make a movie!

When given the chance to come up with our own topic for the first video projects, I immediately knew what I had wanted to do. As incoming freshman, everyone has to make the choice whether or not they want to live on campus. That is why I picked my topic to be commuting versus residence life. I think my video will be helpful and informative with this because it can give new people an idea on exactly what they would be dealing with. Not only that, but it also allows a student to hear opinions of others who are, or were, in a similar situation as they are. I plan on asking the students and staff what they believe are the positive and negative aspects of commuting, or living on campus, the benefits or downsides to it, and to name something they believe Southern can do to improve the experience of a resident, or commuter. I hope to keep the video interesting by interviewing a range of students (age, gender, personality), and to also try to keep an almost equal balance between the amount of commuters interviewed versus residents. I am also trying to incorporate music (iMovie is confusing!). Also, I have been working on ensuring that the sound works at a proper volume, the video is clear and easy to watch and the words are on screen long enough to read. All of these aspects will come together to help create a good video. All the questions being answered in this video will be helpful to first year students in my opinion, because it gives them insight into something they don’t really have access to. They will not understand fully until they experience it themselves, but hopefully my video will help Overall, I’m excited to continue working on my project and I hope everyone enjoys the final outcome!

School, Work, Repeat.

When given the assignment to track our schedules for INQ, my immediate thought would be how interesting it would be to actually see in paper how we schedule our lives. In reality, all this assignment really did was show me how much of a life I didn’t have at all. I say this meaning, I’ve gradually been spending more and more time at school, staying after, studying, doing homework, and attending campus related events. Besides school my other time sucker was work. I love my job, but it definitely takes up a big chunk of my time every week. I didn’t notice at first, but when I studied my schedule it was truthfully a little shocking. When I mentioned it in front of my boyfriend, he was quick to agree and say I’ve been on the down low lately (Whoops!). In reality, was this a bad thing? I didn’t think so. Until another friend texted me saying she misses me. Someone who I would see on the daily. I put so much effort in trying to schedule in school time, that I scheduled out the “me” time! I suppose I still procrastinated on certain things, like assignments I knew were due in a week instead of two days, but yet I still didn’t have enough time to be social or relax. My work commitments took away that extra time too. My time management skills were terrible in the beginning of the school year. I’ll be the first to admit it. I put everything that wasn’t due the next day to the side and only focused on the priority work, and what I wanted to do. I can definitely say after doing this study I’ve taken something from it. I’ve learned how difficult something so simple as time management can be, and when trying to balance, make sure you don’t over do one side – keep it easy, and equal.

As a tip- One thing I've started to do is write my work schedule in my school planner. That way when going to write or do work, I see immediately the time I wouldn't have to do it.

SCSU Involvement !

This week I attended the SCSU club involvement fair. Among the 50 or so tables, there were two that were very interesting to me. The first, was the SCSU cheerleading team. I cheered in high school and when I was a kid. I was able to ask what some of the qualifications were (Standing Tuck).
I also had a chance to visit the Best Buddies table, an organization that gets involved with kids with special needs. I also did this in high school, so I was excited to have a chance to continue with it. Overall, the fair was very entertaining.
I got to try some free fuze drinks, have some free food, and listened to some music by SCSU’s own radio station. Happy Blogging Everyone!

I spent a lot of time picking through the various blogs between students, and to be honest…. I think they are all really good. The fact of the matter is nobody should have to not be considered an “A” grade because the whole purpose of the assignment was to talk about things and give input with your own opinion. Also, everyone has put their own personality and style into their blogs.  This makes it hard because personalities will be drawn to ones that are similar, and not every student is alike.
I think that as long as the criteria was covered, everyone has turned in “A” level work. I really enjoyed Taylor Rispoli’s blog because she makes it really professional.  The way she words, and phrases things really reflect her personality. You can view her blog here: ( http://trispoli.blogspot.com/ )
Also, the other blog I enjoyed reading is Taiesha Edward’s blog, which can be found at: (http://thebubbleoftaiesha.blogspot.com/ )
Her blog is a clear attention grasper because of the layout she chose. I do not know her, I assumed she was from the other INQ class, but she has a clear taste in music, and style which she portrays in her blog.  I think in general these two are good EXAMPLES of “A” grades.
We are all from different backgrounds, experiencing college in a different way. Who’s to judge us on what grade we get? We all take the time to write about what we did or think and that’s it. I believe everyone has chosen how they’re blogs are going to be written, and whether it matches someone elses style or not doesn’t matter. Everyone has a done a great job ensuring each post has the correct content and such. Overall, those are two people who are great examples of who deserves an “A” grade.
