SCSUcommunity.mov

Here it is! Finally I was able to upload my video. (No power.. Boooooo.) Luckily, once I got on campus I was able to finish it here. I think my video turned out quite well. I made sure this time I managed to reach the five minute minimum requirement, and I also tried to make sure that my video had a more clear beginning, middle, and end. I tried to use written slides that explain exactly where I was going with it. The only flaw that I think my movie may have is that the topic was a bit too broad. I really wanted to talk about how close the student body at Southern is compared to how people see it. To get the point across I wanted to discuss all of the opportunities and advantages SCSU gives to get involved, make friends, and how they keep the students and faculty close together. Ultimately I may have covered too much, but I believe that it all tied together when considering the topic. To improve it I think I could have taken out a few of the topics I covered, and instead went into further detail on what I left in the movie. I also think it would have been nice to insert some actual video footage to break up the whole “text slide – picture slide- repeat” process. I tried to do this a little by adding in quotes I took from some of my friends who are students here. I also tried to add in pictures that went along with each topic to show what I meant. Overall, I think the final product is pretty good.  I made sure that the slides were left up long enough for the viewers to read everything. In my last movie, that was a problem that I had as well.

HAPPY MIDTERMS!

Well we have officially made it to the half way marking point! With the excitement comes the underlying nerve wracking knowledge of the coming midterm grades. I have one more grade to be received, but so far I can’t say I am anything but happy with what I’ve gotten. Of course, there is always room for improvement in anyone. I’m not exactly sure what my GPA would be right at this point, but I don’t think it would be bad at all. I think it would be mostly average, but of course these aren’t our final grades. I think my grades definitely represent the amount of time that I put into the class. For my wellness class I have an A+ and I would have hoped it would look like that because I have definitely done the most work in that class and put in the most effort when it comes to writing papers. I believe highly in the idea of “what you put in is what you get out”, unfortunately sometimes when a person is faced with a simple task they don’t always go the extra mile to get even better grades when they know they will pass without trying. This is true when thinking of myself personally and I will be the first one to admit that. When you have a ton of tasks thrown at you all at once its easy to get overwhelmed, so sometimes the easy way out seems to be the most logical right? I guess it may true for an situation. However, I believe that during the last half of this semester I need to really put in my full effort and my grades will amaze me. Overall, I am proud of the grades I have accomplished so far this year, and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

H20

For this weeks blog I decided to talk about the large sculpture on campus that seems to go unnoticed. The sculpture is called “H2O: Liquid Zone”. It was created by Mikyoung Kim. The sculpture is massive spanning the sidewalk between Engleman Hall and Morill Hall.  It is an entirely silver colored sculpture that is composed of multiple large wave like parts. To me, this is exactly what I had thought of when I first saw it during orientation weekend. To my surprise, I may have been right. (Based on the title at least).
I mean, everyone can have a different interpretation of it though. I believe that it represents the ability to just go with the flow, or “to ride the wave”. I believe in college, or any part of life this is a key factor to have. I’d like to think it’s the type of person I am. Wherever life takes you is usually where you should end up. I believe when creating this sculpture the artist wanted people to make it their own. I love the size of it, the massive piece is truly something to gaze at as you stroll by.
The only think I don’t like is the location. Not many students walk by it that often, usually they’re found cutting through Engleman to stay out of the cold air or rain. (Guilty!) I noticed when doing this assignment there aren’t very many scuptures or things in the middle of the campus, or academic quad. Other than that, I don’t think there is very much I can say I don’t like about the piece of art.

Scsu football :)

For this weeks safari I decided I would write about our homecoming football game !  It was a lot of fun except it starting raining at some point :( I ended up leaving the game super early because of that. I wasn't able to see the end of the game. It was fun to see the school spirit in everyone and even what came out of myself! It was the first time I really dressed up and attended a school even just for the fun in it. Overall it was a very fun and interesting experience. After all, you only get to go to your first college football game once ! :)

Fun Enough?

Do something fun on campus. It may seem odd, but the slightest of things on campus can be deemed “fun” for me. Why you may ask? Truth is I’m NEVER on campus. I have classes at eight am everyday and I’m out by twelve or earlier. So this week, when I stayed after to study, a friend of mine asked me to go eat. (Taylor was in my video!) It was surprisingly amusing because I was so taken aback by the hustle and bustle of students everywhere. I’m not here to see what the campus community is like besides the half asleep morning crowd. We waited in what seemed like the forever long Mondo’s line, (My first try of it) and then struggled to find a table. I have never seen the student center 100 percent full before. The reality is, once we sat down and got to eat and catch up I realized I was enjoying myself. The reason being that for once since the beginning of my college career, I looked and felt like a normal college student. I stopped being the girl that walked on campus, went to class, and then left. I think that even by involving yourself in the SCSU community in such a simple way can make a difference. So while many of you may read this, and think that lunch with a friend is so boring, I actually enjoyed the little social time while here on campus. I plan very much so on engaging more in activities here at Southern. I know how much the staff and upperclassmen encourage joining in on various clubs and activates. Here is the link to the student affairs site which will branch off into tons of different pages based on what you would like to see: http://www.southernct.edu/studentlife/

Success !

When first coming into college, one of my biggest fears is that I wouldn’t be able to just easily adjust to the new life. Some students, come right in and are able to swiftly move into their new schedules, while sometimes others struggle. Thankfully in my own eyes, I feel as I adjusted wonderfully.  I think I am meeting my goals great. For beginning, I didn’t want to set any that are too high. I simply made small ones. For example, some goals are that I wanted to make sure I don’t skip classes, and that I do all my assignments. So far, I have managed to do both of those for all my classes. A setback of course is that I have to rewrite my usual schedule to make MUCH more time for schoolwork. It’s worth it though. For the second half, I basically have the same goals as the first semester. Maybe I will improve it by hoping push myself harder to not just hand in assignments, but to hand in grade A work. So far, I have been very successful in my classes as well as my college social life. I continue to grow my social circle with new friends everyday. I hope to work into a more set work schedule. This will allow me to have a stricter schedule on when I will be working or when I will be doing schoolwork. Having a strict schedule is something that I will struggle with. Overall, I truthfully really can’t complain about my first semester of college. I believe the hardest part is over with, and now the biggest task ahead is to keep up the determination and motivation. Sounds easy don’t it? Yeah we’ll see how that one goes…
