This week for INQ we all headed off to the library. I often
go to the library just for a quiet place to do work, or to print something. I
hadn’t yet gone to actually look for a book. Our librarian guide’s name was
Wendy, she was super nice and knew exactly what she was talking about. We were
given a paper to fill out which forced us to use the various parts of the
library’s website and to go on our own to look for books.
I think it was a very
good idea, but they should have given us a little bit of a better idea of how
the website works, rather than just throwing us in and making us search and
waste our time trying to figure it out. I thought the most fun part of the
whole class was when we got to go and search for our books. It allowed the
student to get out and for many of us it was our first time doing this. Wendy
was very helpful.
If you needed assistance she could easily point you in the
right direction. I think that the trip to the library was overall very, very
helpful to me as a student. It showed me how to use many of the resources that
I was unaware Southern even had. I am glad that I learned how to look up
articles, journals, use our database, find books, and even where to go just to
check a book out or pick one up. Southern has such a huge database of information
it seems impossible for them to not have what you are looking for, you just
have to learn to filter your search to the basics. I think the trip to the
library on Tuesday was very helpful to all the students.
